VENUS

A pearl seduction.

'The pearl owes nothing to man. It is absolutely a gift of nature on which a man can not improve.’ George Frederick Kunz, mineralogist (1856-1932)

A pearl is the only thing used in jewellery that doesn't need to be shaped. They are worn already for over 6000 years and through those years, people created a lot of myths around this 'gift of nature'. For example, in China the pearl is a symbol that protects against misfortune. And the Romans thought pearls were an impregnation from heaven, a sign from the goddess Venus. That made pearls even more expensive then gold.

In The Netherlands we also have our own story: The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632) made a portret called ‘Het meisje met de parel’ ( the girl with the pearl earring).  This painting is a mystery on its own. Nobody knows who she was, if she even ever existed, and the extremely big pearl..who's was that? This painting and it's speculations symbolizes everything the pearl stands for: pureness, unprejudiced and sensuality.

Jewellery collection 'Venus' is a todays translation of these speculations; around the pearl and its possessor.
